I have used ACU for a few years, refinanced a vehicle, traded and repurchased...Crystal is AMAZING! Goes above and beyond. She is the BEST to work with.

I've been with this bank for approximately 15-20 years and this is the first time I've felt the need to leave a review like this. I recently took a trip overseas, first time ever. Prior to leaving, I sent half the money that I planned to use to a friend's bank via a cash app (Which I had sent money many times before using the same cash app), so as to avoid ATM and currency exchange fees when I arrived, and I didn't like the idea of using my bank debit card overseas in general. Halfway through my trip, I decided to send the rest of the money that I needed. I made the attempt, and the bank rejected it, I tried again, and it rejected it. So, after a little while I get a text from the fraud department inquiring if I made this attempt, and I answered yes. This was followed up with a phone conversation with the fraud department and they did whatever they had to do and said I was all set to make the transaction. Well, it failed again. So I decided to wait another day and see if it would go through, and it failed again. Now, because I am in a different time zone with a 12 hour difference, I have to stay up late in order to call the bank directly. At this point I needed money and had no choice but to get a cash advance from a credit card, which, anyone familiar with credit cards is aware that there are fees and percentages that you need to pay in order to get an advance. So, after reaching the bank and having 3 or more phone conversations, over probably 4-5 days, the bank said they had blocked the use of cash apps because to many customers were having to be reimbursed due to fraudulent transactions. (I've never had a fraudulent transaction through the app that I used) They also made it clear that they did not have to give notice to customers that they were blocking these transactions. So, now I only have a few hundred dollars in U.S. currency, and a small amount of money on me from my credit card which is know where near what I need for the remainder of my trip. So I asked what do I need to do to get "my" money out of the bank? I was told I would need to use an ATM, which I did not want to do, however, I was told that was the only option. So, for whatever reason, the ATM's overseas were only allowing me to take a certain amount of money/pesos out a day, it took me 3 days to get what I needed. The transactions fees charged by the Athol Credit Union involved 3 different fees per transaction which I would have never had, had I been able to use the cash app that I used just a couple days before I left the U.S.. These fees added up to less then $30 dollars, but regardless, I felt because the bank gave me the ATM as the only option, which they obviously make money from, they could reimburse these fees as the ATM is something I was trying to avoid. Well, after calling again, like 3 different times while overseas and after arriving home, I was told the bank would not reimburse these fees. I requested a call back from the woman that made the decision to deny me these fees and days have past again without hearing from her which has lead to this review. This review is for the purpose of letting others know what predicament a bank can put you in when it comes to your own money, and the methods you may be forced to use when in a jam that they make money off from regardless of how minimum.

Worst banking experience of my life. When you have problems with your account, everyone will ignore your emails. I went into the branch and got called a liar by the man in charge. I had 5 separate emails ignored, 2 were to senior management. I finally reported them to the massachusetts division of banks and immediately got a reply. They refunded the money from their mistake. Apparently they've learned that they can ignore any problems involving a refund and only 20 percent of the population will push back. The rest is pure profit. Really terrible bank right up to the top. Be very careful working with this bank. If you don't have extra money to fight back, please be very careful.

I joined ACU about a year ago and have had a really positive experience. Customer service has been great both over the phone and in person. Their online system is good. It's really nice to be able to join a local credit union that is run well. I also used them to get my mass save heat loan and the process was really smooth and easy.
