1st Bergen Federal Credit Union is a great institution to be a member of. Their Branch Manager, Cynthia, is a welcoming addition that truly cares about each member and their goals. She has helped me as well as many others who stand before her with banking as well as loans for automobiles and much more. If you want to feel like you’re working with someone who cares for your needs much more than just as another customer, please look no further and welcome to the institution that truly feels like it’s part of the family.

The staff is professional, considerate, friendly and polite. It’s always a pleasure walking into my branch. That’s great. The problem is with their Visa debit cards. My card has been declined at the United States Postal Service when I was ordering stamps online. I did visit my branch at the time to find out what the issue is, and at first we thought we could remedy this. However, it turned out it cannot be. It apparently has something to do with security protocols so even though the USPS is a federal establishment, I suppose that doesn’t guarantee their security protocols are what they need to be for all financial establishments. 🤷♀️ While I don’t shop at the USPS that frequently it bugs me that when I do I’ll have to pull out a different card. My saving grace is that I did not close my banking account before joining the credit union. If I had done so, I literally couldn’t even buy a book of stamps online. I admit that due to this, I literally don’t even bother taking my card out with me when I go shopping because I can’t trust that it won’t be declined even when I have money in my account at all times. Like there’s no list of where I can’t use my card so I don’t want to be out and get embarrassed by a false decline. You know the look you get. 🤣 So instead of streamlining my accounts, I have to keep two accounts, one with my bank and one with the credit union. I really like supporting my community and I love that I can walk over to my local credit union for transactions. My strong advice is that you keep another bank account open until you’ve used your card a while to find out if you run into any issues paying your normal accounts. If you don’t have a backup, you might be in trouble.

I have been with this bank maybe 7 yrs and I question why I continue. It’s always something. Weekend transaction are delayed over weekend to show up on statement . Transfers to zelle and cash app all of a sudden have a limit (that previously wasn’t there) it’s horrible that something like a decline has to happen for them to explain WHY it happened. When I asked why all their default settings (cash app Zelle limits atm limit) aren’t mentioned when you sign up. Roman (i think that’s his name) said “well did you inquire”. Their bank hrs are comical. Their app a joke. Their website goes through maintenance just about every night. It’s more of a headache than a bank.. I think we’ve reached the end of the road

Actually, I so appreciate this establishment and all of the people who work there, with whom I’ve interacted. I have not one complaint. I’m handled with respect and kindness. I can ask questions, I get the help I need and they are, in my opinion, very professional. I also bank at another popular banking institution and although their customer service has been quality, I feel invisible to them when it comes to getting even a small loan. 1st Bergen gave me my very first loan and I’ll always respect and be grateful, for that.

You responded to my first post but it looks like I cannot respond back. That’s not the issue. Don’t tell me that other banks do this. With Chase for example, if the account goes into the negative, I have until 11PM that day to bring the account back up into the positive before they charge me the No Sufficient Fees. What your bank is doing is gross. If I get direct deposit today let’s say at 4AM it clears, but an automatic payment comes in at 3AM or 12AM, you proceed to charge that fee. It’s just a few hours difference within the same day. I cannot control at what time I get deposited and at what time another business decides to withdraw; the point should be that IF during the same day I make the funds available, that same day, then why are you charging me. Why don’t you decline the transaction then? If the funds aren’t there, and you won’t proceed to pay the item, then decline it! Instead of declining the transaction, you prefer to let it hit the account just to charge that fee and it’s really gross. I’m switching my direct to a different credit Union that doesn’t do this mess or back to Chase it is because honestly it’s disgusting.
Weekdays 9am–4pm typically have the shortest wait times for new member inquiries.
