I am from VA. 69 AND DOING FIND. SELF-HELP IS A SISTER BANK TO MINE IN VA. BAYPORT. I CAME IN NEEDING HELP, I GOT THIS BEAUTIFUL, PERSONABLE, WONDERFUL CASHIER NAME SUSANNA. SHE HELP THE OLD LADY, WHO VERY LITTLE COMPUTOR SKILLS. I TRUST HER MORE THAN MY GOD BROTHER WHO DESIRED MY CREDIT CARD FOR HIS USAGE. I NEEDED CASH FROM OUT OF STATE. EVERY OTHER BANK WANTED TO CHARGE ME. SHE WAS BETTER THAN A RELATIVE. I WISH I COULD COOK FOR HER. SHE IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON. GOD BLESS YOU SUSANNA. PRAYING FOR YOU. MERRY CHRISTMAS. WILL SWITCH IF I BECOME PERMANENT TO DURHAM. THANKS.

For those of you who cannot get through to a person. Call the magnum at branch and hit 0 then 0 again and it will put you through I have been with Self-Help for over 10 years. I first joined very happy with the small bank feel and it being a coop to help the community. Each year this bank has gotten worse and worse and I have been trying to give them the benefit of the doubt but I just no longer can take the stress of banking with self Help. Their customer service is sub par on a good day, and just absolutely useless on any other. They have multiple 3rd parties running their services, so any time they lock your account or cards, which is way more common than you would ever think. (My experience is at least 2-3 times a month) Usually on the weekend, when they are closed and have no one available to unlock your card. The first few times you will get an automated call to verify your transaction but I have not gotten one of those calls any time this year and have to wait when the bank is open, they are not on lunch, and hope they pick up their phone. Never had a bank before that had a voicemail 8/10 times I call. Any time I try and deposit a check there is always an issue, usually a 7 day hold and they will blame the other bank. I was once desperate enough to have to call the issuer of my check to remove the hold, to only be told they have no holds so I would be able to cash or deposit it instantly. When trying to work with self help during this I was told "not sure what you expect me to do it's almost like 4:30 already" then was told to just go get it cashed or something I then had to go to a checks cashed location that quickly processed the check and themselves able to access the funds on it instantly. After this I went back to the bank and deposited a decent amount of money since it was the first time my account ever went negative. I was not warned if I gave them cash, they will not let me use my account for any reason until I called and had to have them, "send a message to operations" for me and they will get around to looking into why my account is still locked. I honestly cannot stress this enough. This is the absolute worst bank experience I have ever worked with, and I have banked with Bank of America.

I've banked with Self Help for years because I love their mission. However after too many frustrations I'm closing my accounts. They shockingly don't always answer the phone during business hours, and the competency of their reps is hit or miss. Their services, especially online banking, aren't keeping up with the times (Zelle currently isn't working, and I've had trouble with Venmo too). It has been a huge pain to transfer all my auto payments to my new bank, but I'm looking forward to an easier banking experience.

Normally I've had great experiences with this company but unfortunately today not so much. I had an interaction with one of their employees named Bonita Green, we were trying to have a matter resolved and perhaps she was having a bad day but she was rude, she purposely hung up on me and forwarded my call to voicemail when I called back. At the end of the day when youre employed and you represent a company, your job is to do just that. I could see if we were having a nasty or hostile conversation but we were not. So I feel very disrespected. I've been with self help a couple of years now and thats literally enough to make me close my account. I take pride in how I interact and I handle my customers/clients with care at my place of employment, even when a problem arises. So whenever I interact with someone who does not hold the same values it's very off putting
