So my bank account went into the negative. And before I ever got to pay it off we had to move very suddenly out of state. Honestly after that I’ll admit I did forget about the debt which was a very small amount and by the time I realized I figured it was going on my credit and I would just pay it off from there. Let me just say I am not mad because they want there money. I messed up and am fully willing to take accountability for that. But to continue the story. I moved to SC around may of 2025. Now come the end of November I get a letter in the mail that is from a Law firm stating that my wages will be garnished. And when I checked my previous paystub they had indeed been garnished. Garnishment from a private company is illegal in South Carolina. But they had gone to this law firm and filed the garnishment ba k in September. I never received a notice this was happening so I could pay the original balance off and now I owe 500 over 300 more then the original owed amount. Yes I moved but they had no trouble tracking me down to serve me so why did I not receive any notice. They also have my phone number on file so they could have reached out that way as well. Now here is where the part I’m mad about happens. The Law Firm they used, I called them and offered to settle and they wouldn’t budge and told me I could go pay online the full balance which was somehow now 40 dollars more then what the judgement had stated. When I went online to see how much was left since they have already garnished me once I’m required to waive all my rights just to log in and pay. I also discovered this law firm had not filed any of the paperwork needed with the state of SC for the garnishment to be legal regardless of what the Virginia court had awarded. My employer lives in CA so he had no clue this garnishment was illegal in the state of SC which I was a resident in prior to being served or call fed going to court. This law firm they have associated themselves with has predatory collection practices and if you read there reviews many many people, almost all, will agree and have a similar story. When I brought up the garnishment being illegal I was told that my employer would have to send in a letter and refuse to pay. Why? I, the person being garnished right before Christmas no less, am telling you it’s illegal. They bullied me and tried to have me unknowingly waive my rights, such as a right to dispute, to pay via online. And the balance keeps getting hire even as they take out wages. This is predatory. So the reason I am leaving this review here is a warning. Do not bank with this company. They have willingly associated with a firm that practices predatory collection despite being a “for the people” credit union as they describe themselves. When I called to inform them they didn’t seem to care about there brand being associated. So do not bank with them. If you mess up they will not even reach out to rectify or work with you. They will just send you to this other predatory company. And you to will have your wages garnished illegally for a sum of money that some how keeps going up and not down. To be a credit union that is for the people and is supposed to stand against predatory practices they themselves participate in them. STAY VERY FAR AWAY!

We always try to support local credit unions everywhere we have lived but this is the worst one yet. Banking here is like banking with a bank in 1995. Everything is so outdated and everything takes so much leg work to get done. We have spent 5 hours now trying to close our account and it still has not been completed.
